Brazing :: Crobalt® can be silver-solder brazed with a torch, furnace or induction. Cleaning and preparation prior to brazing are similar to that of Cemented Carbides. A ground surface with or without gritblasting is recommended. A further cleaning with an oil-free solvent is preferred. Brazing Handy & Harman’s Easy Flo-#3 or its equivalent is recommended. Brazing temperatures of between 1300°F and 1500°F are ideal. Heating to and cooling from these temperatures does not affect the original hardness of Crobalt®.
How to Use Crobalt® Cast Alloy Cutting Tools to Best Advantage
1. If High-Speed Steel is working efficiently at a given feed, speed and depth of cut–
With Crobalt® cast alloy, increase the surface speed 25% to 50% and double the feed or depth of cut. Then adjust these factors until the best balance of production,
finish and tool life is obtained.
2. If High-Speed Steel is failing at a given feed, speed and depth of cut–
Use Crobalt® cast alloy tools at the same speed, feed and depth of cut, and work upward until best results are obtained.
3. If Cemented Carbide is working efficiently–
Comparative results may be obtained in borderline cases by reducing the surface speed about 30% and doubling the feed.

Grinding Crobalt® Cast Alloy :: Grinding of Crobalt® cast alloy may be done with a vitrified bond aluminum oxide wheel of about 46 to 60 grain for roughing and about 80 to 100 grain for finishing – using a wheel of F or G hardness so the wheel will be self-dressing. The surface speed of the wheel should be 3000 to 4500 ft. per min, and the feed should be approximately 0.001" to 0.002" per pass. Grinding may be done either wet or dry. Wet grinding is preferred. In wet grinding, be sure to use a good lubricant coolant in generous quantity at the
point of contact. In dry grinding, DO NOT QUENCH the tools. For best possible results under specific operating conditions, we suggest that you consult a grinding wheel manufacturer as to the best wheel to use.
To obtain maximum service life from Crobalt® tools, ALWAYS grind the END of tool bits and blades, rather than the top or side, in order to keep the cutting portion on the outer surfaces of the tool casting as furnished. NEVER grind away the outer surfaces so that the cutting portion is at the center of the bit or blade; for with all cast alloy cutting
tools, the best cutting properties are located at the surfaces of the casting.
